One of our most frequently asked questions is “What should I wear?”, and since that can’t be answered in a simple sentence we wanted to create a page full of tips!

Tip #1: Wear something that makes you feel confident!

Before we get into tips related to our personal preferences on what we like to see on camera, the number one thing to consider while looking for the right outfit is “does this make me feel confident”.

If you feel comfortable in what you wear, your confidence will shine through in your photos! So, while it may be nice to keep some of our next tips in mind while choosing an outfit, remember that it’s what makes YOU happy and confident that matters the most. If you have a favorite dress that may not be one of our recommended colors you can and should still wear it! Our next tips are mainly recommendations for people who have no idea where to start when it comes to picking what to wear to their session.

Tip #2: Colors We Love

When it comes to picking the color of your outfit, there can be so much to choose from. While the classic black and white can be a great neutral to work with, if you’re looking for ideas for other fun colors that we love photographing, here’s a few pallets to look at:

As you can see, we love working with neutral, earthy tones. We find that when a client wears neutral colors we are able to get more shots at a variety of backgrounds without worrying about clashing colors.

Tip #3: Fabric with Movement

We LOVE working with fabric that moves! That could be a flowy dress/skirt, a cool scarf, a long jacket, etc.

Tip #4: Color Coordinate

This can mean a lot of things! You can color coordinate to your location by doing a little bit of research on what prominent colors are at your location and picking outfits that will fit nicely with those colors.

But, the most important thing to be color coordinating with is other folks who will be photographed with you. That means if you’re doing a couples, small group or family session you should all plan what you’re going to wear ahead of time to make sure it all looks cohesive. No one wants to be the only one wearing red when everyone else is wearing blue!

Tip #5: Factors to Pay Attention to

There are a few more important factors to take into consideration when choosing what to bring/wear: the weather and how much walking will take place.

If you know it’s going to be cold during your session it might be nice to choose an outfit that has layers, or to bring a warm layer to throw on between shots.

And, if you know you’ll be doing a lot of walking during your session (urban sessions, or nature sessions with a hike) but want to wear heels for your photos, it might be nice to pack a pair of easy to slip on shoes that will be more comfortable for walking between shots.

As always, if you have more specific questions about your outfit (or want help picking between two) feel free to send us a message!
